recording studios in atlanta ga, preproduction and basic post productions

WAXJAM RECORDS

President And CEO: Tim Grant
Vice President: Naudivee Whitfield

WaxJam Records: established in 1996 under the name Eastcoast Projects; then serving as a mediator between major and indie records companies; as an A&R company.

As a small business owner; Tim Grant became very interested in the preproduction side of the business; that's when he created WaxJam Records.

Tim Grant: My objective for creating the recording studio division of WaxJam Records; was to provide quality low cost recording studios for local artists.

Some of my biggest challenges was and still are: Educating and introducing new  customer to the general practices of recording studios; such as price comparisons of our company and those of other companies; So if we advertise a promo offering $35 per hour; it doesn't mean to expect  a low quality recording; It means it is just a promotion to give low budget artist consumers a season where they can afford to record that mix tape, Song, or lp at an affordable price that comes along with great quality recordings. A promo usually last runs 15 to 18 days at a time; in any case; you can expect to get so much more for your money; at an affordable price.

Recording Set up and gear: The thing that we get the most from artists who simple don't know and some who just need to know; and the questions are: Do you use Pro Tools? Yes; in both studios.
Do you use outboard gear for mixing? No; we don’t need to' we are in the business of pre-production high-quality low budget recordings; meaning'  recording through inboard gear; The process starts like this: You enter the soundproof booth and sing/ rap/ speak into the mic, your voice travel to the mixing board (Makie) which provide phantom power to the mic; so your voice from the mic, to the mixer; to a compressor, (sole purpose is to compress voices to prevent distortion) to interphase, to computer to music production program.
Do we have a console? What is a console? A console is nothing more than a piece of furniture that has the mixer, the computer, the monitor(s) and some gear such as the compressor; noise filters, sound effects and other gear installed in, on and around it; topped off with two monitors.
Do we have a console: No: Purchasing or building a console was not in the plans for our design; we wanted to create a more custom cosmetic look; therefore all equipment gear are set up on desk like tables; designed to look like the cot pit of a large airplane; My idea; It all turned out just as I imagined it and the new clients love it. The whole thing was built to serve as an educational environment.

In layman’s terms: We have a completely different wiring setup and use of our gear than that of traditional studios; we do not record many live instruments.

Our studios are wired according to music quality standards instructions for the software and hardware used in our studios; Pro tools Professional Le and Digi Design Interphases.

The experience artist can expect: To walk in a nontraditional studio with low beam lighting; some solid and some flashing all over the place. (Designed to put you in the zone) You'll walk in the front door of the engineering room of two engineering stations numbers 1 and 2; station 1 to control the session coming from sound booth 1 and station 2 to control sound booth number 2; which are in the next room; you'll be able to see both booths through a large solid glass window directly in front of the engineer's stations,  designed to record two different sessions at the same time; mostly used by artist managers who have more than one artist; receiving super discounted rates for blocking both studios.

Demographics: We have both studios set up in an urban city; where we might get a few artists who recognizes the value of low cost production recording verses recording in large traditional high cost studios where rates may be anywhere from $75 to $100 or more per hour; So they just keep on coming back to us. Why should local artists who work regular nine to five jobs be expected to be financially able to pay the same rates as millionaire major artists; that is unrealistic and inconsistent with ethical industry practices. Recording studios should not rely on the businesses of lower-budget up and coming artists to finance and/ or offset the cost of slow business; unless they drop the prices to accommodate an affordable rate for the possibility of repeated lower-budget customers.

Looking to hire any new people? We have a list of experience Engineers who work in our studios as independent contractors; but in the future we may have room to add other experienced Engineers to our list.

What are some of the qualities you look for in an Engineer before considering for work? Good question and let me say this as firm as I can: We do not consider Engineers to work for us who's main objective is to over use our studios for personal projects of their own; we have a great incentive program that allows our Engineers to record some personal projects at WaxJam Records as a huge discounted rate on specific dates and times. We look for Engineers who understand and appreciate the vision of WJRRS. We want people who recognize that applying a small amount of sales effort on their own; keeping a pocket full of flyers on hand ready for any opportunity to market the business will have a significant effect on the growth of the company which means even more work for them. In the recording business the average Engineer can gross anywhere from 50 to 60K a year if they only apply themselves. If you are a contractor and you provide the service of Engineering clients recording sessions; that's a great job, a passion, a much needed service; we need each other; together we make the business a huge success. We would prefer Engineers who are in the business solely for the passion and not with the intent to use the studio for personal projects; we want honest people.

Our Divine sole Purpose: To provide  cost effective service to the community, overcoming obstacles from new business concepts and to educate the artists/ the communities with a clear insight of the recording business. We earned and deserve the respect and creditability in the community; for we practice what we preach; Quality, affordable and honest business.
